Copper cabling is constantly evolving to keep up with ever increasing communications equipment processing speeds, hence the transition from Cat5 cabling to Cat5e to Cat 6. Ampec will advise you on the most appropriate data cabling option to meet your needs (please see Consultancy & Auditing for further details).
Cat5e Cabling
Cat5e cabling is still used for over 95% of networks. Cat5e cabling allows data transmissions up to a Gigabit per second at distances of up to 100 metres, if correctly installed. Cat5e cabling which is not fitted to the appropriate standard will result in data corruption. Prior to any new hardware installation, it is therefore strongly recommended that you have your system tested, to check it is capable of supporting the upgrade.
Cat5 CCA is a cheaper copper coated aluminium cable which can reliably transmit data at 100Mbits but is unreliable for a 1000Mbits (Gigabit) network. It is a false economy to install Cat5CAA instead of Cat5e cabling as your network will be severely impeded. Many unscrupulous installers use this instead of CAT5e to save on costs.
Cat5e FTP is a shielded version of Cat5e cabling and is used in industrial applications where high voltage cables are likely to be in the vicinity now or in the future.
Cat6 Cabling
Cat6 cabling has a higher specification than Cat5e cabling and is designed to support Gigabit data transmission up to 100 metres and even 10 Gigabits over shorter distances. The installation and testing criteria for Cat6 cabling is much more stringent than for Cat5e cabling and hence more expensive. Cat6a cabling and Cat7 cabling are capable of 10 Gigabit data transfer up to 100 metres.
Voice System / Telephony System Cabling
Reliable cabling infrastructure for your phone system is essential for efficient communication. Cat5e cabling and Cat6 cabling is now common place to support all communications systems, resulting in specific voice cabling being gradually phased out. Voice Over IP (VoIP) cabling infrastructure requirements are Cat5e cabling or Cat6 cabling with its higher bandwidth boosting performance. As part of our complete service, Ampec works in partnership with and can recommend phone system installers.
